b) Plot a graph of the values of x and y for each of the two tables on the previous page. For each graph, plot values of x (1, 2, 3,...) on the horizontal axis and the calculated values of y on the vertical axis. You may wish to plot the graphs on the same graphing calculator used to collect the data. Sketch a smooth curve to connect the plotted points on each graph.
c) Compare the two graphs. How are they similar? How are they different?
7. A "butter gun" was invented to allow busy restaurants to butter several pieces of toast at a time. The gun squirts one ounce of melted butter in a square pattern with each shot. As shown in the diagram, the ounce of butter is evenly spread on one piece of toast placed one foot away from the gun, or on four pieces of toast placed two feet from the gun, or nine pieces of toast placed three feet away, and so on.
a) How much butter is received by one piece of toast at distances of 2 and 3 ft?
b) Extend your thinking about the butter gun to include distances of 4 and 5 ft. How many pieces of toast will be buttered at 4 ft? 5 ft? It may be helpful to sketch an enlargement of the butter gun drawing in your log.
