Your teacher will act as the chairperson. As you prepare for and participate in role-playing a town meeting, you will be expected to:
- explain why fossils are important;
- describe how the age of a fossil can be determined;
- indicate how a highway might impact on the natural-selection process of the living organisms in the area;
- explain why a great diversity of species is important for the survival of a community.

Criteria
How will your performance at the meeting be graded? Keep in mind that not everyone will be arguing every side of the issue. It is very important that you decide before the work begins how each person will be graded. Discuss this with your small group and then with your class.
You may decide some or all of the following qualities are important:
- completeness and accuracy of the science principles presented in your side of the argument;
- accuracy of the science principles used to dispute your opponents’ positions;
- forcefulness or conviction with which you present your argument;
- quality of questions you pose to the government officials.
Once you have determined the criteria that you wish to use, you will need to decide on how many points should be given to each criterion. Your teacher may wish to provide you with a sample rubric to help you get started. |
