Scenario
In this Active Physics chapter, you will try to help educate children through the use of toys. With your input, the Homes for Everyone (HFE) organization has developed an appliance package that will allow families living in the “universal dwelling” to enjoy a healthy and comfortable lifestyle. The HFE organization would now like to teach the children living in these homes, and elsewhere, more about electricity and the generation of electricity. They hope that this may encourage interest in children to use electricity wisely, as well as encourage development of alternative sources for electrical energy by future generations.
The HFE organization will work with a toy company to provide kits and instructions for children to make toy electric motors and generators. These toys should illustrate how electric motors and generators work and capture the interest of the children.
In an effort to help others, people often make changes or introduce new products without considering the personal and cultural impact on those whom they are trying to assist. If you ever become involved in a self-help community group, such as HFE, it would be important for you to work together with the people you are assisting to assess their needs, both personal and cultural. Although that is not possible given your limited time in class, you should recognize the need for collaborative teamwork in evaluating the impact of any new product on an established community. |
