BUILDING A FOUNDATION
Cycle 1

I Think

magnetsImagine you have three magnets of different sizes and a way to measure how strong they are.
Write your answers to the following questions on your record sheet.

  1. 1.My Hypothesis: Which of the following is your hypothesis about the relationship between the size of magnets and their strength?
  1. I think that as the size of the magnets increases, their strength will increase.
  2. I think that as the size of the magnets increases, their strength will decrease.
  3. I think that as the size of the magnets increases, their strength will not change. This means there is no relationship between the two variables.
  1. 2.My Reason: What reason would you give to convince someone of your hypothesis?

Working as an Efficient Research Team

Most modern scientists and engineers do not conduct experiments alone. They work in research

To Do

Team Member 1 Supply Master: gathers materials.

Team Member 2 Procedure Specialist: reads instructions and steps aloud.

Team Member 3 Team Manager: makes sure team stays on task and all team members are participating.

Team Member 4 Recycling Engineer: returns materials.

All Team Members Take turns measuring the distance when the magnet first attracts the paper clip.

teams. The teams share responsibilities. One member of the team may set up the experiment. Another may make the observations and take measurements. The members often have specific tasks that they do.

Scientists often have to follow complicated directions to get pieces of equipment to work. They read the directions to each other as they set up the equipment and try to make it work. They may need to collect special measuring instruments from a storeroom. Then, at the end of each day, they must return the instruments.

Once they start collecting data, all trials must be recorded in a journal. To accomplish all these tasks, one scientist often keeps track of the time they have to set up and complete the experiment.
