MATH Connections Ancillary Materials: Assessments

Assessments

The Assessments for MATH Connections reflect the intent of the NCTM Standards on Assessments in several ways.

  • The assessments allow students to use a variety of formats to demonstrate their knowledge of mathematics concepts and skills. Students are consistently required to analyze problems, determine solutions and write justifications for their solutions. Some quizzes have performance assessment items that may be assigned to a group or to an individual.
  • The assessments are tied to specific mathematics objectives. Each assessment item is directly linked to the Learning Outcomes for each section of the chapter. The assessment items on the chapter test may not match every learning outcome for a chapter.
  • The assessments focus on communication, reasoning, problem solving and connections as well as skill development. They reflect the concepts, content and processes of mathematics.
  • The Solution Key and Scoring Guide for each quiz and chapter test contains solutions to all questions as well as suggestions for scoring based on a 100-point scale. A rubric has been developed for open-ended questions, which details the elements of a rich response. Two assessment forms, Form A and Form B, were developed for each quiz and chapter test. The two forms are designed to be of comparable difficulty and provide you with an alternative assessment for each quiz and chapter test.
