There are six modules for MATH Connections - Books 1a and 1b are Year One. Books 2a and 2b are Year Two, and Books 3a and 3b are Year 3. Book 1a is comprised of Chapter 1 through 4. Book 1b is comprised of Chapter 5 through 8. Book 2a has 3 chapters, 1 through 3. Book 2b also has 3 chapters, 4 through 6. Book 3a has 1 through 4, and Book 3b has chapters 5 through 8.
Each chapter depends in some significant way upon all the chapters that come before it, as indicated below. For example, Chapter 2.3 of Book 2a depends upon Chapters 1.1 through 1.8 of Books 1a and 1b, and, Chapters 2.1 and 2.2 of Book 2a.
Specific Examples
"Turning Facts Into Ideas" is the title of Chapter 1 of Book 1a, and describes various ways to display and analyze 1-variable data. Chapters 4 of Book 1a and 3 of Book 3a are strongly dependent upon this Chapter. 1.4, titled "Graphical Estimation" shows how graphical displays of 2-variable data can be used to estimate unknown data points. In a similar fashion, 3.4, titled "Counting, Probability, and Statistics" extends the ideas introduced in Chapter 1 of Book 1a to a more sophisticated, unified treatment of counting, probability, and statistics.
Utilizing the accompanying Table of Contents from MATH Connections, in addition to the Chapter Prerequisite Diagram displayed here, the strong math dependency that exists between various chapters in the three books can be detailed. The sequencing found in MATH Connections is essential to its proven success in the classroom.
