MATH Connections: First Edition

welcome
How do you develop a curriculum everyone can agree on?
Kids doing Math You start by bringing together leading mathematics and science educators, high school and college teachers, business people, scientists and arts professionals. You speak with parents. You ask questions. You find out what is working in education - and what is not. Most importantly, you listen. Only then do you begin the work. And that is what we did to create MATH Connections®.

We created MATH Connections out of what we learned from all this research, and then field-tested it in classrooms for more than five years. We used the results to create a secondary mathematics core curriculum that works for all students, students of all learning abilities and backgrounds, whether they attend urban or rural schools. Our curriculum gives students a fuller, richer understanding of mathematics, one that prepares them to continue studying mathematics in college...empowers them to meet the demands of business and industry... helps them think critically and make informed decisions... and gets them ready to make a valuable contribution to society.

The feature that sets our curriculum apart from other programs is precisely what makes it so effective. As its name suggests, MATH Connections is built around connections of all kinds. Connections between mathematics and the real world of people, business and everyday life. Between mathematics and science. Between mathematics and history, geography, language and art. And between different areas of mathematics.

By combining traditional skills-building and conceptual thinking, MATH Connections demonstrates to students that mathematics is a vital, powerful, relevant and flexible tool for interacting with their world. Throughout the program, students learn how electronic technology and logical reasoning complement each other - and how to use both to find and explain answers, shape and defend their opinions, and pose and explore new questions. The classroom-proven results of this innovative, balanced approach is the best reason to use MATH Connections in your school. Test scores are up. Students are learning and doing mathematics. And they're liking it!
