Active Chemistry – Chapter 1: Fun with the Periodic Table

The PREPARE folder for each Activity includes Downloadable text material including sample lesson plans, sample quizzes, big chemistry ideas, crucial chemistry concepts, and student misconceptions. Brief videos including "crucial chemistry" and "Try the activity", where an experienced teacher describes how to teach this activity.

The SHARE folder for each Activity is an opportunity for you to
ask other teachers about concerns or questions:
“I’m having some trouble with the law of definite proportions. Can someone help?”
“How can I do the lab with limited equipment?”
“A student asked an interesting question. How would you respond?”
“What should I do if the student is absent for the lab?”
“How would you test for student understanding of this concept?”
“The activity took me much longer than expected. How long did it take others?”
“They just called an assembly for tomorrow and all classes are only ½ hour.
Any suggestions on what I should cut?”

The COMPARE folder allows teachers to use student data to inform instruction.
Everybody administers the same five quiz questions to students for that activity.
Teachers compare results with each other. For example:
“In #3, many students chose answer ‘b’. Can anybody explain why this was so appealing to students?"
“All of your students got #1 correct? What did you say or do in your classroom instruction that you think accounts for this?”

Additional Video to support you on the 7E instructional model, the Prepare, Share and Compare folders, the Chapter Challenge and Tips on pacing and the Lesson log.

As a participant in this research project, you can also earn $300.
